In Okinawa, there is a type of textile called Bashofu, which is woven using fibers extracted from the kind of banana plant. Bashofu is believed to have been used as clothing for people since old times.And survived the post-war era of scarcity and made a comeback. This textile, which is one of the symbols of Okinawan culture and beauty, continues to be carefully woven even today.

The scraps of fabric in the photo are likely fragments of old Bashofu kimonos, probably woven during the Taisho or prewar Showa periods. I have long held deep respect for this wonderful world of dyeing and weaving. I believe many others share this same sentiment. It is a beautiful culture that I hope will continue forever.
